TRAVEL INFORMATION & GUIDANCE:
List of personal items participants may want to bring:
- Comfortable walking shoes (tennis shoes preferred)
- Clothing appropriate for playing sports
- Bathing suit (for swimming at Virginia beach)
- Sandals
- At least one set of formal clothing (for the farewell dinner and other formal events)
- Students are encouraged to bring articles that reflect their country’s culture and dress.
- Several casual outfits – dress on campus is usually very casual, including jeans, shorts, and T-shirts (Select clothing that can be easily washed in a machine. Dry cleaning is expensive in the U.S.)
- Note: The weather in Virginia is quite hot in the summer, with the average daily temperature reaching 32-35 degrees Celsius.
- A towel (to use as an extra bath towel and for the beach trip)
- One long sleeve shirt or jacket to wear for outdoor activities on cool nights
- Sunglasses
- Any medicines/prescriptions that you might need while you are in the U.S.
- Travel alarm clock
- Small umbrella
- Backpack or small bag to pack necessities for day trips.
For IYLEP participants bringing a laptop, free wireless internet access is available all over campus. For those without a personal computer, there are many computers on campus that you may use free of charge. IYLEP participants will each be given a prepaid cell phone for the month with unlimited minutes and texting to U.S. numbers. IYLEP participants will receive one prepaid international calling card upon arrival, and may easily purchase other calling cards as needed.
*The U.S. relies on alternating current, 60 cycles, 110 volts. If participants bring electrical equipment (such as hair dryer, shaver, iron or computer) they should be sure it is compatible, or they should bring an adapter.
