For information on the other IYLEP program, at UMass, Amherst.
The University of Massachusetts will assist AED in the administration of the IYLEP program. The program is entitled“Political Leadership” and the approach is to discuss Politics and Political Leadership in a combination of academic discourse and real life examples. There will be sessions on a number of different topics but they will focus the institute around the question of “How Things Get Done” in real life. There will be case study sessions on:
-Campaigns – how do people get elected and what are the consequences?
-Public Policy – how do people get included/excluded from decision making?
-Leadership –what are the models of leadership?
-Technology – how are cost benefit analyses done and what are their uses?
-Conflict – how do we resolve conflict?
Also discussed and analysed will be the first year of the historic Obama administration. Current US political disputes will be a vehicle for discussing law, personality, issues, leadership, institutions, demographic information, coalitions, major political debates, and American culture.
After the program students will:
-Have a deep understanding of American cultural and political life
-Have a deep understanding of the dynamics (international, historical, demographic, economic, and institutional) driving US politics.
-Have a deep understanding of public policy making – the politics and the analysis
-Have made friends and connections that will last you a lifetime.
Among some of the in-depth questions explored:
-What is the role of politics in American life?
-How does culture affect politics and politics culture?
-What is leadership? How is it developed and how is it exercised?
-Is there such a thing as political leadership? Does it differ from other kinds of leadership?
-What is the role of history and institutions in the development of leadership?
-Is leadership dangerous in a democracy?
